Why birds are not being attracted

I have just purchased two new bird feeders and a really nice hanger to put them on for my front yard. I washed the feeders, billed them with oiled sunflower seeds and a mix of small seeds, put it up and waited, and waited, and waited. I haven't had one bird come by and even look the place over. What can I do to welcome them......????

I live in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

PS
The bird feeder is in the front yard. There isn't allot of activity there though and no cats are around.
Any suggestions would be greatly accepted.

Hi Marlene,

If these are the first feeders you've ever tried in your yard, it can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few weeks before birds will come. You're certainly using the correct seed in black oil sunflower. Keep in mind birds are creatures of habit and can be very cautious when it comes to something new in the yard. Try to keep your feeders about ten feet from the nearest trees or shrubs. Birds need a secure area where they can hide out in between feedings at your bird feeder. It also depends greatly on the amount of habitat that you have available for them ie. large trees, medium sized trees, shrubs, hedges, ground cover, etc. Remember, birds need food, water, shelter, and nesting areas. The more of these things you can provide the greater the diversity and numbers of birds you will attract. Otherwise, just be patient. Once you have a single visitor, more will begin to show up soon afterwards.

Hi Randy S.
Thank you for your kind words of encouragement. I will continue to wait for my little feathered friends to visit. It is the first time for a birdfeeder in this yard, so it could very well be the reason they are taking so long to find them. There aren't allot of shrubs in the yard either. Once spring gets here I will try a bird bath too. I live on a corner lot and the feeders are on the front, but not too busy a street. Should I move the feeder? The back yard would be more busy and I wouldn't get to see them as often.

Thanks again.
